Great Ormond Street Hospital
Great Ormond Street Hospital was the first hospital dedicated to children in the English-speaking world. Founded in 1852, their founder Dr Charles West recognised that children needed different care and treatments to adults. Even today their clinical research and education teams always put the needs of sick children and their families first. They provide services to children from all over the UK who need their specialist expertise as part of the country’s National Health Service.
In 1929, Sir JM Barrie, author of the famous novel and play ‘Peter Pan’, gifted all rights to Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Hospital, including the right to royalties from any stage performances, adaptations, publications, audio-books, e-books, radio broadcasts and films of the story of Peter Pan. This gift has provided a significant source of income to Great Ormond Street Hospital, and continues to benefit patients, help pioneer new treatments and fund groundbreaking research.
Leading experts in children’s healthcare
Great Ormond Street Hospital has the widest range of health services for children on one site. More than 50 different clinical specialties and sub-specialties meaning children with complex conditions are able to be treated in one place, a major benefit for them and their families.
Great Ormond Street Hospital has over 200,000 patient visits each year and is the largest paediatric centre in the UK for children’s heart problems, brain surgery, renal transplantation, intensive care, craniofacial reconstruction and gene therapy.
The hospital is committed to providing high quality and safe care to its patients with three priorities. The first is to reduce harm to zero. The second is to consistently deliver outcomes which place Great Ormond Street Hospital in the top five children’s hospitals in the world. The third is to exceed the expectations of patients, families and referrers.
Lean Six Sigma Essentials for Healthcare
In staying true to these priorities, we collaborated with Great Ormond Street Hospital and The Lean Six Sigma Company to develop our Lean Six Sigma Essentials for Healthcare online course. This collaboration was put into motion after Dr. Shankar Sridharan, Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist and Chief Information Officer at Great Ormond Street Hospital, attended a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt training given by Michel Doppert at The Lean Six Sigma Company. Following this training, we came to the conclusion that GOSH could stand to gain much from the implementation of the Lean Six Sigma mindset and methods, and we set out to work on our online course. Now, recognising how this training could benefit the entire healthcare sector, we have released this course on our e-learning platform and made it available to the public. We hope this online course will help healthcare institutions and practitioners increase their productivity by improving their ability to recognise improvement potential and solve problems.
